Gosh, it's been a long time since I've posted, been pre-occupied with so many other things lately, sorry! Here are some pics of fave recent cakes from the past couple of months.

This cake was so lovely in person and looked fantastic against the rustic stone walls of the Bella Vita Ranch in Stephenville, TX. The bride loved the way the ruffle detail mimicked her dress.

Proving that simple is sometimes better, with stunning with fresh blossoms clustered around and pearlized fondant bands at the base of each tier. This cake was delivered to a magnificent private estate in Dallas.

This abstract design was perfectly at home in The Modern Art Museum.

For the groom with everything, this cake was a copy of Cody's custom cowboy boots.

One of the heaviest cakes I've ever made and one of the loveliest too. Elegant ivory on ivory with just a touch of subtle bling in the brooches.

For the groom who fancies hippos.

Kate's wedding at Colonial Country Club was classic in every way, right down to the buttercream-iced cake with pearls and scroll piping.

Brittany's cake is one of my all-time faves, I nicknamed the design "Coco" because it reminds me of Coco Chanel.

Ahhhh, The City Club ballroom, the room that seems to have been made just to show off cakes. This photo doesn't do justice to the space which has mirrors absolutely everywhere, and spectacular lighting too. I love the whimsical nature of this cake.

A retirement cake for an XTO Energy employee. Joy was the second person ever hired at XTO, more than 26 years ago. The cake is a replica of one of the XTO-owned buildings that she renovated to award-winning status.

The cast of "Extreme Dinosaur Cakes"

Bear with me cake friends, this is not the typical Sublime Bakery post. This is a story of illness and health, of hope and healing. And I promise a happy ending...

Imagine you are a bakery owner, cake designer, mother and wife. You are at the top of your game, highly sought after for your custom cakes, a regular competitor on Food Network Challenge, working on multiple book and TV projects, featured frequently in the press. Your children are happy and healthy, your marriage strong and loving. You are essentially living your life beyond your wildest dreams. Imagine then that you become quite ill, quite suddenly. Your once limber, strong, and capable body is wracked with pain, your joints stiff and rigid. Imagine feeling betrayed by your own body, unable to do the most mundane daily tasks much less work 60-90 hours a week to create the magnificent tiered and 3-dimensional cakes you've become known for. Imagine feeling that everything you had worked so hard for is slipping away, that your life as you know it, is over. Imagine the frustration, anger, and hopelessness. Imagine being told your illness is incurable. Imagine hearing from your doctor that the "good news" is that there will be periods of remission from the pain, and that the new drugs you'll take for the rest of your life are vastly improved over the drugs of old. Nevermind that these drugs will sometimes make you even sicker than you are now, or that some could kill you. The good news is you're less likely to become crippled, or die, than persons diagnosed 20 years ago.

Imagine you are me.

Nine months ago this week my body began to fail me. On November 19, 2010 as I stood in the High Noon studios in Denver, preparing to film my fourth Food Network Challenge of the year, I knew something was not right. As I assembled my T-Rex armature during "mise en place" my hands didn't want to work, they were stiff, tight and tingly. I shrugged it off and quietly berated myself for accepting two Challenges in one 30 day period, a decision I knew would likely lead to sore muscles, achy bones, and the requisite post-Challenge sinus infection or strep throat. But wasn't all that pain was supposed to come AFTER the Challenge? AFTER I carved a 5 foot dinosaur out of cake, not before? I didn't give it any thought until the next week, the week of Thanksgiving, when instead of getting better, it got worse. I didn't give it much thought until I realized that the pain was equally bad in the joints on both sides of my body, not just the right side as I would expect from overuse. I didn't give it much thought until I was much, much worse. Until the week before Christmas when I nearly lost my mind from the pain. Until I had to go to the doctor begging for pain meds so that I could enjoy a pain-free Christmas day with my family.

Bet you're wondering where that happy ending is, huh? Let's fast forward 5 months. It's spring, I'm still in physical and emotional hell, and I've finally gotten all my tests back. The Dr. confirms my diagnosis as Rheumatoid Arthritis. At the age of 42. RA is an autoimmune disease, it's basically a malfunctioning immune system. My immune system was attacking my own body. That's obviously not the happy ending, so hold on. She laid out my treatment options and wrote me several scripts. I asked about dietary changes I should make. She looked me in the eye and told me that "diet has nothing to do with it". I walked out of her office and began to cry. And that's when I knew. I knew right then and there that this doctor, no, NO doctor would give me a viable solution for fixing my immune system. I would have to find another way. If my immune system was broken, I figured, why not fix the damn thing?

Now for the happy ending... Fast forward another 3 months and I'm in my 7th week of freedom from the pain, swelling and stiffness without taking ANY medications. Not only that, but I feel better than I have in 20 years! I have tons of energy, my mind is clear, those cruddy chronic "issues" we all deal with are gone, my adult acne has even disappeared. My immune system is happy, happy, happy! After seven and a half straight months of absolute hell, I AM WELL. Am I cured? Nope. It doesn't work that way unfortunately, but I have found a natural approach that keeps my immune system in check. I radically changed my diet, I do regular acupuncture and saunas, I take loads of Chinese herbs and supplements, I juice daily. I've made changes to keep my life in better balance. I closed my storefront to relieve the stress that comes with running a retail business- full time employees, massive overhead, inflexible work hours. I spend more time with friends. I enjoy my kids more. I worry less. I remember to slow down and take time for myself. I work with the clients I want to work with and say no to the freakin' Bridezillas.

This natural, or "alternative", approach is more work than popping a few pills every day, but the side effects are all positive and they definitely won't kill me. I've been so amazed by what I've learned about wellness and diet in these past few months. I've always had a healthy approach to food but this has taken it to a whole new level. Food, the "right" food, is nurturing, it's healing, it's life-changing. I'm starting a new food blog, launching next week, where I will detail what I've learned, share recipes and resources, and hopefully offer a little inspiration to others who have been told "diet has nothing to do with it". It seems that almost every day lately I meet people who are struggling with their health, looking for better answers than those they've been given in the doctor's office. Today I met two of those people in the produce section of Central Market. One lady couldn't wait to share my story (and my email address) with her aunt who also suffers from RA and has been frustrated with her "nasty" medications that make her so sick. These are the folks I hope to reach with my blog.

So that's the story, or at least the first chapter anyway, we'll see what comes next. For some of you this probably answers some questions you were afraid to ask about why I didn't seem myself for a while, or why I closed my retail location so suddenly. I couldn't "go public" right away, it took some time to get to where I am now, but boy am I glad I'm here now!

And for the record, I'm NOT making excuses for my pathetic showing at Food Network Challenge "Extreme Dinosaur Cakes". Our problems with our poured sugar and subsequent inability to stay on the intense time line we had created would have derailed us anyway.

In closing, I owe a HUGE thank you to my husband Van, and my son Cade, both of whom had to use every last ounce of patience and love at their disposal to help me through those tough months of hell. I couldn't have done it without you!

As for what the future holds? I'm still doing cakes, I'm just a bit more "selective" about my commissions now. I'm also working on a book and teaching classes. I'm still doing all the things I did before, just in a more moderate and sane fashion. Will I go back to Challenge? Hell yes I will, I wouldn't miss it for the world!

Food Network Challenge "Giant Wedding Cakes"

Did you see Food Network Challenge Giant Wedding Cakes? It was a doozy! If you missed it, fear not, it will re-run, and you should definitely make sure you catch it. Don't worry, I won't give away the ending here.

So, the first thing you need to understand about Challenge is that it's all in the editing. They've got over 60 hours of tape to work with after all, and they only need 40-ish minutes for TV. The second thing to know is that it's a LONG day for all of us, cast and crew, judges, etc. We start at 5 or 6 am after VERY little sleep (I average 2.75 hours of fitful sleep before competition day) and it's go, go, go for 12 to 15 hours. Yes, I know, Challenge is only 8 hours. But in the finished product you don't see the set ups, the second and third takes on intros, the "hero shots", the false starts, the green room, makeup, etc. Trust me, it's hella long. The third thing to know is that everyone on Challenge has a role to play. Example: Kerry is the "mean" judge. That's her role, it's NOT who she is. Trust me on this. The fourth, and most important thing to know is that Challenge IS A TV SHOW. Let me repeat this. CHALLENGE IS A TV SHOW. It's not reality, it's reality TV, there IS a difference.

So, now that all that is out of the way, let me tell you how much I love Challenge. No, love is really not a strong enough word. I mean, people love chocolate and their dogs and even a favorite pair of shoes. Love is not nearly strong enough to describe how I feel about Challenge. Hmmm... well, truth be told, it's my drug. Seriously. I can't. get. enough. It's the most stressful, exciting, exhilarating, exhausting experience you can imagine. It's tense, nerve-wracking, and vomit-inducing. It's an adrenaline rush. It's non-stop madness. It's heaven. I adore it. I think about it day and night. I would make it my full-time, everyday-of-the-year job if I could. I know this makes me a little "sick", but hey, if there's a cure, I definitely do NOT want it!

"Giant Wedding Cakes" was my second Challenge, taped back in May. I filmed my first Challenge, "Paranormal Cakes" in January of this year. Two weeks ago I competed in my third Challenge, and next week I will do my fourth. That's right, it's my drug, and I need it frequently, 4 times a year at minimum. Unfortunately, Challenge goes on hiatus from May through September, so as you might expect, the summer is hell for me.

And now, some frequently asked questions, answered:
Q: What do they do with all the cakes?
A: After the beauty shots and close ups, they throw them out. It's a TV studio after all, not a licensed commercial kitchen. Trust me, you wouldn't want to eat these cakes.
Q: Do you tape in New York or Los Angeles?
A: Neither. The production company for Challenge, High Noon Entertainment, is based in Denver and that's where Challenge is filmed.
Q: Is Keegan a big teddy bear and Kerry a meanie face?
A: Not exactly, and no. While Keegan is a very kind and approachable person, and yes, a bit of a teddy bear, he is also an accomplished pastry chef and has a critical eye and palette. He's a tough judge, but his role on the show is somewhat "softer" than Kerry's. Kerry has decades of experience in cake and sugar art and has forgotten more about such art in the last 5 minutes than I will ever know in my lifetime. She knows her stuff and she tells it like it is. She is not, however, mean. Or cruel, or unfair. Her Challenge role is much more one-dimensional than her true personality. Remember, it's reality TV, NOT reality. Both Keegan and Kerry are much more than what you see on TV.
Q: Do they provide your tools and materials?
A: No, we bring everything with us except the kitchen itself, the kitchenaide mixer, and the fondant sheeter.
Q: Is there still a live audience?
A: No. The new set does not have room for a live audience. But if you're really, really nice, or give me a lot of money, or are a member of my immediate family, you just might be invited to be in my VIP section next tiem.
Q: Why do you always make such big cakes?
A: Why not? Seriously, I think Challenge is always about going big or going home. I never play it safe cuz that's not fun nor does it make for good TV. I'm an over-achiever and a glutton for punishment. I also believe that the height requirement should be met with cake and not rice cereal treats, styrofoam, wires, blah, blah, blah... it's a cake competition after all.
Q: Is Claire really that skinny or do they use smoke and mirrors?
A: Yes, she really is that tiny. I know. But don't hate her for it, she's really nice too!
Q: When you go to Challenge do you get to meet Bobby, Giada, Ina, and Paula?
A: I wish. Especially Giada and Ina, J'adore!!
Q: Did you really want to "whack" Bronwen at Giant Wedding Cakes?
A: Haha! Of course not. I wanted to win. But that whole story line made it a much more interesting show, right? It's TV, remember?
Q: Did Gio really build a 6 foot cake without a center support?
A: Yes, he did. But he will never, ever, do it again.
Q: Did Donna run into some trouble?
A: Hell yes she did. Her airbrush malfunctioned and that was a very big problem because she intended to airbrush her WHOLE cake! Also, and you didn't see this on the show, her assistant Marina (the gorgeous blonde) cut her hand VERY badly and had to leave the set for quite a long time. They do NOT stop the clock when someone gets hurt. This upset their entire time-line and definitely caused Donna major stress. Don't worry, I'm betting she'll be back to kick some major cake booty and when she does I hope I'm nowhere to be found, cuz she's got mad skillz!
Q: Do you always cry on Challenge?
A: So far, yes. What can I say? I'm emotional.

Black and Ivory Wedding Cake with Bows and Brooches at Buttons Restaurant

Oh how I love this cake! I know you're tired of hearing that every cake is my favorite, but seriously, I can't help myself. I get kinda attached.
Latoya and Lee were so wonderful to work with. Latoya knew exactly the style she wanted to convey and she trusted us to "do our thing", LOVE THAT!

We used a pale ivory base fondant which is really nice and warm with the black in contrast. Sometimes pure white can be a bit jarring with black and this tone was just beautiful.

I hand cut the "brooches" and dusted them with silver disco dust which catches the light so nicely and gives a more subtle bling than inedible rhinestones.

Buttons Restaurant provided the perfect "cool and stylish" backdrop for the reception.

Elegant 7 Tiered Ivory, Pink and Gold Wedding Cake

This cake was a true labor of love. Seven tiers of varying heights with lots of design details: quilting and pearls, damask stencils, piping, tufting, painting. We delivered this towering confection to The City Club in downtown Fort Worth. It looked stunning in the room with it's mirrored walls and harlequin window treatments. Tami Winn Events and LeFleur Couture outdid themselves with the room decor and the fresh flowers on the cake.

3 Dimensional Sculpted White Tail Deer Groom's Cake

One of my all-time faves! I had such a blast creating this sculpted cake. This white tail deer was a first for me and I loved every minute working on him. I sculpted his antlers from white chocolate and his entire body is edible- fondant over buttercream, and yes, Red Velvet Cake! We delivered this groom's cake to the fabulous Ashton Depot in downtown Fort Worth. As you can see, I gave the big boy a goodbye "air kiss" before leaving him in his final resting place! Love!!

Third Food Network Challenge

It's been 3 months since my last posting in July about my Food Network Challenge "Paranormal Cakes" premiere and we've been busy with lots of fabulous cakes, 2 more Challenges and loads of events and appearances. My second Challenge, "GIANT WEDDING CAKES" which was filmed back in May will air on November 7th at 8pm EST. This is a real doozy so make sure you tune in. Ok, so my first Food Network Challenge is FINALLY airing tonight and I'm extremely excited, but a little nervous too. I mean, I know what happens obviously, the show was taped 6 months ago! But, what I don't know is how they will edit dozens of hours of tape into a one hour show. The post production team can pretty much make the show into anything they want. After all, they manage to make Kerry Vincent look pretty darn tough, right? The truth is, she IS tough, but she's also incredibly kind, generous and supportive of the competitors. They just don't show that side of her very often. It will be interesting to see what kind of Challenge story they choose to tell this time. Like everyone else, I will wait and see. Come on 7:00, I'm dying to see it!

Elegant Ivory Hexagonal Wedding Cake with Edible Sugar Brooch

We have been so fortunate this Summer, we've done one fabulous cake after another for wonderful clients. Last night we had the great pleasure of creating the Bride's cake, Groom's sweets, and party favors for Courtney Crummel and Gif Summers, now officially Mr and Mrs Summers! I first met with Courtney and her mother several months ago and it was clear to me that she wanted something really special for her wedding. She wanted her cake to be unique but not necessarily "trendy". We combined an elegant tone on tone ivory and champagne palette with hexagonal tiers in varying heights and an edible sugar brooch to achieve just the right mix of tradition, sophistication, and "of the moment" flair.

The edible brooch was definitely a show-stopper!

The royal icing stenciling with over-piping and sugar pearls was elegant and timeless

The groom was decidedly "not a cake man" and wanted to have cupcakes and mini pies and tartlets instead of the traditional groom's cake. I like a man who knows what he wants! His goodies included Chocolate Obsession and Caramel Cream Cupcakes, Lemon Meringue Tartlets and Mini Apple Pies with Crumb Topping and Caramel Drizzle. I heard today that the impatient guests wiped out the sweets before the bride and groom were even announced!!

For the 300 guest favors we created 4 varieties of Chocolate Dipped Pretzels and placed them in cellophane bags tied off with champagne ribbon.

I often get "attached" to the cakes I create for my clients but this one was particularly hard to let go of. My girls had to practically pry it out of my hands!!

Wedding Cake for MY FAIR WEDDING WITH DAVID TUTERA

A couple of months ago we had the honor of creating a cake for David Tutera and his WeTV show MY FAIR WEDDING. The episode aired tonight so we can finally post some pics of the cake and the venue.

David's client this time around was quite the diva and wanted a fashion-focused over-the-top cake. The design included edible sugar beads, hot pink sugar "sequins", pearlized "dupioni silk" fondant, tufting and draping, and real crystal rhinestones. We used a combination of sugar flowers and fresh flowers on the cake.

David and his crew were so wonderful. I'm a big fan of David's and I was pleased to learn that he is every bit as calm, cool and kind off camera as he is when the cameras are rolling. The producer allowed us to stick around for the room reveal, watching from the balcony of the theater. What a THRILL!

Elegant White and Black Wedding Cake and Horse-Themed Groom's Cake

Oh how I love this cake!!
Every wedding cake we do is important, and every couple is special. But every so often we work with a couple that is truly sublime. Sheri and Jeffrey are one of those couples. Their wedding was exquisite in every way, their love story truly memorable, and to top it all off Jeffrey suffered a heart attack the week of his wedding and still managed to make it to the altar to marry the woman of his dreams. Now THAT is special!
This cake was a true labor of love for me. I knew it had to be elegant, stylish and memorable, just like Sheri and Jeffrey. This one will go done as an all-time fave.

Not to be outdone by his extraordinary bride, Jeffrey asked for a horse-themed groom's cake. One of my cake artists, Jessica, really nailed this one. Good job Jess!

We did this super fun wedding cake for a couple who adores their 3 Pug Dogs. The cake was ordered as a surprise by a friend who wanted to feature their dogs along with their love of a casual lifestyle centered around their backyard and swimming pool. We hand-modeled the dogs out of white and dark chocolate and placed them on a whimsical and vibrant 3 tier cake. FUN!!

"Painted" Pucci-Inspired Anniversary Cake

20 years is a milestone in any relationship and worthy of a festive celebration! We did this Pucci-inspired cake for Charles and Alex's anniversary party at the Ashton Hotel in downtown Fort Worth. The pattern was first incised into the fondant then hand-painted with edible lusters. Royal icing piping, a perky bow topper, and ribbon-style roses complete the design.

3-D Stradivari Violin Cake

What a thrill to make a 3-dimensional cake based on the 300 year old Stradivari violin played by the Fort Worth Symphony concert director Michael Shih. Shih recently played the 1710 violin for the Upper School students and board members of Fort Worth Country Day School in honor of the violin's 300th birthday. I was absolutely beside myself when FWCD teacher Christine Derber retained me to create an edible version for guests to enjoy at the reception. Truly a once in a lifetime opportunity!

At Sublime Bakery we like to say "we make life sweet". It's more than our tagline, it's really the underlying philosophy for everything we do here. Every now and then a client will redefine the whole idea of "sweet" for us. Well, this is just the sweetest thing you'll hear all day, I guarantee it.

So, about two weeks ago I get this email from a prospective client, asking if we can do a gluten free cake for he and his wife's anniversary that's coming up in a week. Since the wedding they have discovered that she has a gluten allergy so they can't eat the top tier of their cake that they saved for the occasion. He wants to surprise her with an anniversary cake that won't make her sick. He's thrilled to have found a natural bakery that does gluten free cakes and is so grateful (and totally polite I might add) that we can take his order. Already I'm thinking that he's a contender for Husband of the Year, but here's the kicker... he lives in Lubbock and is going to drive into Fort Worth just to pick up the cake! That's a TEN HOUR ROUND TRIP!!!!!! Seriously! If that's not sweet then I don't know what is!

Well, we were all just thrilled to be in on the surprise, and were so delighted to meet Jeremy when he came to pick up his cake. He was as sweet and polite in person as he was in his email.
The picture above is of Jeremy and his gorgeous bride on their wedding day. We recreated the look of the top tier with a fondant band and sugar flowers on top of our gluten free cake (see photo below).

3-D Lightning Mcqueen Cake and Custom Cookies

We did a super cute 3-D Lightning McQueen cake yesterday for a 3rd birthday party. In addition to the cake we made 30 custom sugar cookies for party favors (above). I got a few process photos of the cake:

Every 3-D cake starts as a block of cake (sorry, I didn't get that photo). I start by cutting out the main details of the shape and then I work towards the finer details.

I used a round biscuit cutter to remove cake where the wheels will be placed.

We did this whimsical, yet masculine, 2-tiered cake for a VIP client of Chef Todd Phillip's at JR's Steakhouse. We loved the color palette on this one! Happy Birthday Ken!

Yep, another 3-D Crown Royal cake! Even with the cake themes that we repeat, we always make each one a bit different from the last. This bottle was on the large side, about 14 by 20 inches, so we laid it on a "bed" of red fondant that's draped to look like fabric.

Groom's Cake with Hand-Painted Fish

One of our Custom Cakes last Saturday was a Groom's Cake with a hand-painted fish on top. The bride provided a photo of a painting the couple loves. The painting featured a brightly colored Tarpon which I used for my inspiration here.
The pic above shows the first stage: a pale blue "canvas". I carved out the scales and other key features then lined those indentations with a dark gray-green. Then comes layers and layers of colors: greens, blues, silver, pinks, yellows..., then some more definition of the lines with gray-green again, and finally, a "glossy" layer to give the look of real fish skin.

"Bogart" the Hobart Arrives

Unless you, too, are a pastry chef and cake designer who owns their own business, and you have just spent 3 weeks trying to meet peak wedding season orders without a commercial mixer, you'll probably not appreciate this post. You may even think I'm being "overly dramatic" here.

I'll not go into the sordid details of the past 3 weeks of drama surrounding our "other" mixer (manufacturer to remain unnamed), I will instead focus on the positive:

(drum roll, please) the Hobart arrived today!! "Hobart?" you say. I know, unless you're in the biz, the name is meaningless. Let me just tell all of you uninitiated souls that Hobart is the gold standard. The Rolls Royce of mixers. The Ultimate. The One. Worthy of a special pet name, no doubt. While most of the "things" in the bakery have feminine names ("Bertha", "Brigitte"), I felt that the mixer, the "muscle" of our operation, deserved a masculine name.

It's a fact. Most of the custom cakes we do at Sublime are for women. When we do have male clients they tend to have very specific and unique ideas about what they want, as witnessed here: scale model of a Stratocaster, fish on a platter, happy face with a cigar, band logo. Sublime Bakery is not your typical cake studio, our cakes are not often referred to as "traditional". We get some pretty unique requests from our clients, and that's what makes it fun to come to work everyday.
Of all our cake designs, our "Yoda" cake receives the most comments from clients who visit the shop and see his photo on the wall or in our portfolio.
I've made several Yoda cakes now but the first is still my favorite. His face was so realistic, my staff and I could swear he was "watching" us!

Sugar Flowers

Flowers can be an important element in cake design, especially for weddings. We recommend sugar paste blooms to our clients in place of the real thing. Sugar paste flowers are safer than fresh blossoms, come in an almost endless variety, and are absolutely beautiful. Fresh flowers can be poisonous and many are sprayed with toxic pesticides, so if you do choose fresh make sure you communicate with your florist about which flowers will go on the cake. You don't want your guests to get sick! Here are some of the sugar paste pretties that we've used recently:

Session Beer Bottle Cake

When Jessie first contacted us about doing a 30th birthday cake for her boyfriend Justin, it was supposed to be a surprise. Her excitement got the best of her and by the time her consult appointment rolled around Justin was in on it. Our cake consults are generally not "BYOB" but these two came prepared. Justin arrived with a bottle Session Lager (empty of course) and asked that we make him a 3-dimensional cake in its likeness. This cake, like the couple, was really fun. Here's what Jessie had to say after the party:

"Thank you so much for the FABULOUS job! The cake was so amazing, better then I even imagined! And Justin said it was the best birthday he has ever had!

We also decided that when I turn 25 next year that he is going to get me a cake from you! So I can't wait!

I am so thrilled to announce that Sublime Bakery will begin offering Sugar-Free desserts as of February 10th. Just in time for Valentine's Day, we'll include 2 Sugar-Free items on our special order menu for that holiday. The full Sugar-Free menu will go into affect on February 17th.

Our Sugar-Free baked goods will be all natural, sweetened with Organic Agave Nectar, and using whole grain flours instead of white flour. These items will not only be sugar free, but they will also have low net-carbs, making them ideal for those following low-carb diets. Again, NO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS, NO WHITE FLOUR!! These items will be baked from scratch each day. It doesn't get any fresher than that. To start with, Sugar-Free goodies will be special order only. We expect to begin carrying Sugar-Free items in our pastry case for walk in purchase within several weeks.

50th Anniversary Cake

A Golden Anniversary is an occasion worthy of celebration. We did this buttercream iced cake this past weekend for a 50th anniversary. Chocolate fondant applied pieces, and a "painted" golden bow with drapey ribbon completed the elegant but fun design. Inside, two tiers of Brown Sugar Vanilla Cake layered with Vanilla Buttercream and 3 kinds of fresh Berries, one tier of our Ancho-Chocolate-Cinnamon combination.

We did this ultra cute and stylish cake for a 10 year old's birthday today. She designed the cake herself, and I have to say, that girl has an eye for design! Lucy knew exactly what she wanted: black tiger stripes, a hot pink heart with her monogram, blue fondant balls around the base and some flowers on top to tie it all together. We added some rhinestones to her bouquet for a bit of "bling" and dusted the top with gold disco dust.

Taylor's Cupcake Cake

We did this totally adorable "Cupcake" cake for a 1st birthday recently. It's a 4 inch round cake that we tapered into a cupcake shape, then we just piped on the buttercream and added fondant accents, sparkling sugar and disco dust.

Bride Wars and The Knot Event

The Knot and Bride Wars teamed up recently to host early showings of the Kate Hudson/Anne Hathaway movie in several major cities, with "Knot" brides as guests. We were asked to do these cookie favors for the goodie bags. We did hearts, wedding cakes and wedding dresses. My favorite were the dresses which we did in several different styles, adding sugar pearls and piped rosettes along with sparkling crystal sugar and "painted fabric" to give each one a unique look. Each favor was finished off with a wired satin ribbon and gift card.

We did these super cute cupcakes and bakery cake last week for a Rock Star-themed birthday party. We used our signature pink Diva sugar to add girly sparkle, and made a large fondant microphone for the cake and miniatures for the cupcakes. FUN!

Dual Birthday Cake

This fun Gaming themed cake was for a dual birthday celebration. The left side of the cake represents the young man turning 21, and the right side represents the man turning 60. A fondant "bow tie" and "dice" finish off the top, and poker chips complete the "game table" look of the fondant base board.

Happy's Groom's Cake and Jamie's Bride's Cake

This past weekend we did the bride's and groom's cake for a super cool couple. The groom's name is Happy so it was only fitting that he wanted a "happy face" cake (after all, he even has happy faces on his custom cowboy boots!). And yes, that is a cigar in Happy's mouth. FUN! Inside is our Double Lemon flavor combo.

The bride's cake was lovely and simple, with alternating tiers of chocolate and white fondant and moss green fondant "ribbon" at the base of tier. Two large sugar "Gerber Daisies" and Cornelli Lace piping finished this elegant cake. Inside is our Black and White flavor combo.
